The whispering circuit, part 3. Homicide 1: The tech CEO
Detective Chen returned to the night market. This was his thinking lab. The frenetic energy of the market helped him concentrate.
After meeting Echo, he realized he was missing something. He thought back to the first case. This was the first of three cases in the last week. All were peculiar homicides.
The body was found in pachinko tech town, a seedy part of town, between the cracks of east end downtown and lower west end residential quarter.
As he arrived, Chen was met by the CSI officer. “The victim was a well-known tech entrepreneur named Jason Stone.”
“Stone? What was a powerful Silicon Valley CEO doing there?”, Chen thought to himself.
His body was found on the cold concrete floor, contorted like a rag doll. His mouth was stuffed with wires.
"Looks like the killer is making a point. Stone must have known something he shouldn't have," the CSI offered.
Detective Chen said nothing. He ignored the CSI trying to make conversation. But Chen agreed, crouching beside the body, his trench coat soaking up grimy water on the street.
On the victim’s wrist, Chen noticed a smartwatch emitting a faint, flashing glow.
“Play back last message,” he commanded. A cold, yet seductive, synthetic voice said, "The whispering circuit has begun."
The message then turned into static noise and faded off.
Clenched in the victim’s hand was a piece of paper stained with blood. The word "ECHO" was scrawled on the paper, along with mysterious symbols. And also smears of a light blue oily liquid.
Chen wondered, “Who or what is echo? And what is the ‘whispering circuit’?” He motioned to the CSI to put the clue in an evidence bag.
These were important clues. But what do they mean?
The shadows of the night were also starting to whisper to Chen. The detective recognized these whispers. This was how all homicide cases began.
As the night grew deeper, the message “the whispering circuit has begun” kept replaying in Chen’s mind.
This was just the beginning. He knew another body would soon be found.
